Holden Caprice SS Drag Races a Dodge Challenger SRT8

It may not be Tuesday but it’s a drag race nonetheless...so Happy Monday.
On a closed down strip of road somewhere in the middle of Saudi Arabia, two examples of pure American muscle battle it out in a classic drag race as the sun sets over the desert plains.
Cherry Red coated with a horizontal black line running from front to rear, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 looks the part and with its 6.4-liter V8 HEMI under the hood rated at 465hp and capable of 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds, backs up its good looks with scintillating performance. The Holden Caprice SS on the other hand is more Q-car than supercar killer, with understated sedan features married to a 360-hp 6.0-liter V8 engine. The car is currently used by Middle East police forces such as the Dubai Police Force and Royal Oman Police, while stateside, better known as the Pontiac G8 (RIP), a specially-equipped version has entered service as a Police Patrol Vehicle.

Dodge Aims the New Dart at Main Street

After seven years without a serious contender in the compact class, Dodge comes back and with a clear mission.
Sergio Marchionne's efforts to revive the fortunes of Fiat Group brands and those of Chrysler Group brought us so far a mishmash of cars. It started off with badge engineering as Chryslers were rebadged as Lancias in order to save the Italian marque. That is an old industry trick and Lancia's success hangs in the balance because its situation in Europe is still deteriorating. But that was only the first move as the second one is building Dodge cars on European platforms.
Enter the 2013 Dodge Dart, a compact sedan that should bring Chrysler back into the competition in the compact cars segment. That segment accounts for roughly 10 percent of the US market and it's growing due to the unending economic crisis, new emission rules, and more frugal customers. In the past, Chrysler produced a few notable and popular compacts, such as the Neon in the '90s. Lately, however, it was represented in this segment by the Caliber, a hatchback that didn't find favor with US customers. It was designed during Daimler's reign and was a relatively complicated car to comprehend with its confusing appearance.
It appeared larger than what it really was and it resembled a crossover, though its target audience was people shopping for a small, simple and cheap car - not a Teutonic masterpiece.

In its first two years, the Caliber, which was intended to be a "world car," was also sold in Europe and China. It had initial success but later on sales dropped like falling off a cliff. The model was doomed and with Chrysler going into bankruptcy and the need for a new compact model for the American market, Marchionne decided to take a bold step by adopting a European platform (and he probably didn't have any other options).
The Caliber was such a poor product that Dodge now claims that for seven years the firm wasn't represented in the compact category."The compact sedan segment in the United States is the second-fastest growing segment in the industry, so (lacking a compact car) we've been playing with one arm tied behind our back," said Reid Bigland, Dodge brand President and CEO."When the new Dart hits the streets, we'll finally be back in the game, playing with 100 percent of the new-vehicle sales market."
The new Dart's look transmits a sporty feeling with Italian flavor due to its stance (and the bright red paint). The Dodge corporate front-end is prominent with its crosshair design and the familiar rear-end design taken directly from the Charger and Challenger. However, a few Alfa Romeo design cues are clearly evident such as the headlamp design and the overall side view silhouette. The interior design is also a significant improvement over the Playschool toy car interior of the Caliber. Emphasizing performance, the dual exhaust is also a unique feature for the segment.
Chrysler claims the Dart possesses plenty of Alfa Romeo DNA (what's bad with Dodge's?) so the three available engines are, as expected, of Italian origin and carry the MultiAir logo, a technology the Fiat Group developed in the last few years. This is not a bad thing in the least.
All three are gasoline engines, as the compact segment is still, for the most part, devoid of many of the new propulsion technologies. The engines include the 160hp Tigershark 16-valve 2.0-liter engine, a 160hp 16-valve 1.4-liter MultiAir Intercooled Turbo, and a new Tigershark 16-valve 2.4-liter MultiAir 2 four-cylinder.
Another unique thing that Dodge added is a gearbox lineup that includes a six-speed manual gearbox as the base option, a regular six-speed automatic, and an optional six-speed dual-clutch.
All in all, at least in the halls of Cobo Center, the Dart looks brilliant and offers the traditional automatic 2.0-liter compact car along with some spicier variants. When it finally hits showrooms in July and after several test drives, we'll know for sure whether Dodge is truly back in the game.

the Dodge Charger Redline and Chrysler 200 S

Mopar arrives on the scene at Detroit with spruced up versions of the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 200 sedans.
It's no secret that the Chrysler 200 is not the most exciting car. Even after it was given a major refresh and a much-needed name change (good riddance Sebring), the 200 was still considered basic transportation. The Dodge Charger, on the other hand, is one of the brand's current gems; we love just about everything about. And when it comes to Mopar, they have the ability to make the most bland and best models even better.
The Super S is basically "Mopar's interpretation of the 200...with an extensive list of high-quality Mopar parts" that enhances the 200's performance and appearance.
Stage I includes a large chin spoiler, satin chrome fog light trim and chrome grille surround along with mesh in the upper and lower grilles. There's also new side sills, "200" badges and 18-inch alloy wheels.Stage II adds a performance coil-over suspension that also lowers the center of gravity. There are also a cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust.
But the real treat here is what Mopar has done to the Charger. The Charger Redline is composed of three upgrade kits: Stage I includes an aerodynamic carbon fiber body kit featuring a chin spoiler, tri-coat paint, and a two-piece grille. There's also a three-piece Mopar carbon fiber rear spoiler that adds additional down force, and a vinyl roof graphic in matte black.Stage II adds Mopar bolt-on performance parts; specifically a front-tower cross-brace and front tower brace caps that provide increased structural stability for improved handling dynamics. And finally, Stage III features the new high-output version of the Gen II Hemi V8 crate engine, which is more powerful than the stock engine.Photos courtesy of Noah Joseph & Drew Phillips/Autoblog.

2013 Dodge Dart Ahead of Detroit

The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart is revealed just days before it's scheduled to be unveiled at Detroit.
As the doors of the COBO Center are about to open, the excitement emanating from Detroit can be felt throughout the industry. This city is the birthplace of countless American automotive greats, so it's only befitting that the rejuvenated (and financially healthy) Chrysler Group is taking full advantage of the event.Coming off the success of last year's "Imported from Detroit" Superbowl theme, the automaker will officially unveil their latest assault on the extremely important C-segment: the 2013 Dodge Dart.
And without much surprise, photos and a video have just been leaked only a couple of days before its official unveiling. Revealed here in R/T trim, the new Dart's chassis comes courtesy of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, although the former has a longer and wider architecture with a large percentage being constructed of high-strength steel.
Power will come from a range of engines, including the new Tigershark lineup of small displacement engines, such as a 2.0-liter four-banger, a 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo, and a 2.4-liter MultiAir.Judging by these photos, it's clear that Dodge invested huge amounts of time and money into the Dart and it looks really solid, both inside and out. We'll have complete details in the coming days from Detroit.

2012 Dodge Charger

Before we delve into the details on the Chrysler Group's latest announcement, let us tell you that murdered out 2012 Charger you see in these pictures is an SXT model equipped with the available Blacktop Package. With that out of the way, let's see what the Auburn Hills-automaker plans to debut at the upcoming 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas as well as the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, both of which kick off next week.
For the first time, the 2012 Charger will be offered with a specially developed Beats-branded, 10-speaker audio system that was designed by Chrysler Group engineers in collaboration with Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
“Our goal in partnering with Beats by Dr. Dre is to integrate their recording-studio quality audio experience for our Charger enthusiasts to feel and hear their favorite music as it was intended – all while heightening the street performance and technology assets of the new 2012 Dodge Charger,” said Dodge boss Reid Bigland.
According to Dodge, the Beats Audio system will be standard equipment on the 2012 Charger R/T Max and included with the Blacktop Package and Rallye Appearance Group on the 2012 Charger SXT model.
Currently, the Chrysler Group offers the Beats Audio system as standard on the V8 Hemi-powered 300S and as an option on the V6 variants of the 300.

2012 Dodge Charger Redline Incorporates Mopar Stage Kits

The Mopar muscle retro-performance catalog has just been expanded with three special kits for the Charger S/T.
Three new Mopar 'Stage' upgrade kits for the Charger R/T will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in the form of the Dodge Charger Redline, with a trio of models to be released later in the year incorporating the special Mopar stage kits.Compared to previous models and special editions the Mopar Charger looks very different with a more menacing stance, and finds some retro inspiration from the 1970 Charger.
Stage I goodies are primarily cosmetic, including a carbon-fiber chin spoiler, a three-piece rear ducktail spoiler, a black grille insert, vinyl roof wrap, carbon-fiber side scoops and R/T badging paying homage to the 1970 Dodge Charger.20-inch Black Envy design alloys from the Mopar 2011 Charger painted pitch black with polished accents complete the exterior package. On the inside, aluminum bezels have been fitted on the shifter and instrument panel including a Redline perimeter accent; stainless-steel pedal covers are also included.
Special performance upgrades make up Stage II that squeeze out a bit more power, bolsters the braking and improves handling. A cat-back exhaust system improves the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8's power and gives it a throatier sound, a front strut-tower brace stiffens the chassis and improves handling, and high-performance brake pads attempt to deliver less fade during repeated stops.Stage III will have Mopar fans licking their chops. Replacing the Charger R/T's 370hp V8 with a 590hp, 7.0-liter Hemi V8 the high-output aluminum-block 426 crate engine pumps out 120hp more than the Charger SRT8's 6.4-liter.
Although it's been programmed to work seamlessly with the Charger's electronics, it hasn't been emissions-tested so unfortunately it's not street-legal.All three kits will be available independently but Dodge has yet to release pricing for the stages.
