Driving fun is set to be sacrificed for more speed as Porsche move to drop manual for the new 911 GT3.
The new GT3 is due out next year and Porsche is currently testing both the manual and PDK versions of the car to decide which will feature. According to 911 project chief August Achleitner, only one will be offered and the PDK is likely to come out on top.Manual 911s account for just 30 percent of sales and when the manual was removed from the 911 Turbo S there were apparently no complaints. A PDK-equipped GT3 is thus a logical consequence.
From one perspective, a move to a PDK makes sense as the GT3 is bought and raced so the tenths of seconds saved per lap is important. However, enthusiasts want the intuitive experience of shifting gears without assistance. It was also confirmed that next-gen GT3 and GT2 models will feature a variant of the electromechanical steering system found on the new Carrera. In defense of the system that critics say offers less feedback than traditional hydraulic set-ups, Achleitner said: "The new system only removes the feedback you don't need. All our race drivers prefer it." Photos displayed are of the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3.
