Green Hyundai Concepts

Hyundai isn't slowing down in their quest to become a global leader in green cars. Get excited for the i-oniq concept with a look back at some other eco-friendly Hyundai concepts.Hyundai has started what could be a marketing blitz in support of their new i-oniq concept set to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March. Nothing aside from a sketch has been released, but it's more than likely a safe bet to infer that the i-oniq will either be a hybrid or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. Hyundai has developed some awesome eco-cars in the past, many of which have flown well under the radar.
The Hyundai Blue2 is a sporty sedan concept debuted at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show. The Blue2 combines a sleek and aerodynamic body (sexy) with a hybrid hydrogen fuel-cell engine outputting 120 horsepower. The power numbers may not blow you out of the water, but things get pretty awesome when you learn that the Blue2 gets an astonishing 82.1 mpg.

Designer Shane Baxley was clearly thinking of the future when he designed the Hyundai Aebulle. The Aebulle is an electric three-wheeler meant to combine the mobility of a motorcycle with the safety of a car. Fun fact: "aebulle" means "cocoon" in Korean.

Nicolas Stone was also thinking future-forward when he designed his Hyundai 2020 city car. Stone's curvy four-door can seat five and would be powered by electricity. Unlike today's EVs, Stone's design would be able to gather its electricity using transparent solar cells placed throughout the car's exterior.

Fans of Hyundai looking for a greener offering from the Korean automaker need only wait until next year for the limited release of the company's first fuel-cell car. Hyundai is planning on offering 500 hydrogen-powered SUVS with a price tag of $50,000 each. The price should go down as the years go by as Hyundai hopes to build 10,000 models per year by 2015.
