Audi has big plans in store for their halo car.The Audi R8 supercar is set for a facelift for its 2012 installment, while a next-generation version should be making its way out for 2014. We have seen some spy shots lately of an R8 prototype testing, so by all accounts a refreshed version makes complete sense. The R8 facelift is expected to make its way into showrooms sometime next year, however as it will arrive in the late 3rd/4th quarter, it could come as a 2013 model.
The facelift should include a new front-end, specifically Audi's new headlight design a la the e-tron Spyder Concept and a new grille. The halo car's V8 and V10 powerplants are expected to be tweaked for more power along with some weight saving measures via the use of carbon fiber and other lightweight pieces. MotorAuthority further speculates that the mid-engine supercar will receive the S tronic dual-clutch transmission, seen previously in test mules. In terms of the next generation model, it is expected to arrive in early 2014.
The second generation R8 could lose its manual transmission and sideblades. An optional head-up display could arrive along with some redesigned headlights with LEDs.It will be built with a 100 percent aluminum body, meaning a stiffer body with roughly 220lbs cut from its overall weight. In terms of power, the 2014 Audi R8 should continue to run on a naturally aspirated V8 engine, tweaked for 450hp. The V10 version should be tweaked for 550hp and a possible turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine could make its way into the lineup, putting out a hefty 600hp.
This turbo motor is shared with the Bentley Continental GT and the Audi S8
