Hyundai to Develop a Hot Hatch Version of the i30

Hyundai is reportedly working on a high performance version of the i30 hatch, but will they consider doing the same to its U.S. sedan counterpart, the Elantra?
According to a report coming from Autocar.co.uk, Hyundai is developing a program for a hot hatch version of their 3-door i3. That plan has been confirmed by the Hyundai UK boss and the car will be developed at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center in Russelsheim, Germany. If all goes to plan, it's expected to be on the market sometime in 2013.It is being speculated that the engine will be a turbocharged version of the 1.6-liter, but will have an output in the neighborhood of about 200hp.
This will be the same engine that will be in the high-performance Veloster hatch that's due next year.For those who don't know, the i30 is sold in the U.S. as the Elantra. Although the hatch hasn't reached U.S. shores, what's relevant here is that it's entirely possible the South Korean-based automaker may consider adding a powerful version of Elantra sedan for U.S. customers.
The technology will all be there, so they just need to add a high-performance package. If Hyundai wants to further establish their performance creds with its growing U.S. customers, this is certainly one way to do just that.
